Light, colors, curves and contrasts. Baby doesn't get tired of observing his environment. All these information stimulate its intellect. They will allow him soon to distinguish some faces and to imitate some expressions.

After 6 weeks, the infant differentiates the objects the some of the other. He begins to organize the time while remembering the past and while anticipating the future. He stretches his body forward when his mother approaches of the bed the arms stretched to raise it. He opens the mouth at the sight of the bottle. The visual information is analyzed therefore, included and the child gets ready to the thus announced following stage. There is interconnection therefore between the different perceptions.

The distinction of the faces

The perception of the faces by the infant is studied very by the psychologists. If one presents to a young infant two drawings, one representative a human face and the other a geometric face, the child will fix the human face longer. Does it mean that the child recognizes the face? He seems that no. Until 2 months and half, the child is in fact attracted by the most complex picture, the richest in curves for example. To the departure, the drawing and the photograph of a face are not for him that a set of features, points and surfaces more or less gray. He will understand later, toward 6 or 7 months, that these points and these features represent a face.

Of course, well earlier, he already recognizes his mother from indications. These last associate several elements:  the manner that his mother has to take it in his cradle, to hold it in the arms and to speak to him, the stamp of his voice, his odor, the expression of his face. Isolated, each of this components home more or less efficient. The only odor is sufficient to identify the mother since the beginning of the second week. The voice is only later again sufficient at the end of the first month and the only view of the face. The association between a voice and a face familiar has been put in evidence at children of 3 months by Spelke. Babies of this age are placed in front of their parents. During the test, these last keep an immobile face and abstain of all gesture and all speech. A loudspeaker, placed between the two parents, made hear the voice of the father and the mother by turns. The baby orients then without hesitating his look toward the parent of which he hears the voice.

Of the grants of innate imitations?

Not only the newborn sees but he is in more capable to imitate. This capacity has been ignored a long time. Yet, René Zazzo had noticed since 1945 that his/her/its son aged of 3 weeks imitated it when he pulled him the language. To the time, this discovery went in opposition to the theories of Piaget, Walloon and Spitz. All three refused to admit these remarks. They affirmed that before the age of 3 months the nervous ways were not developed enough to permit this kind of exercise.

Zazzo yet continued to pull the language to the newborns and his observations have been confirmed to the United States in 1971. Meltzoff showed lately that these possibilities of imitation exist since the birth. The youngest baby tested with success by this researcher had. 45 minutes!

These experiences have the tendency to prove that he exists since the birth of the connections between several fashions of perception since the newborn reproduces a mimic complex that he sees for the first time.

The first emotional exchanges between the mother and the newborn are visual:  all parents felt this emotion extraordinary to be looked at, drunk of the eyes by the newborn. At the same time, the mother fixes his baby's eyes. The two looks attract mutually and are all two loaded of emotion and questioning.
