Orlando, May 30, 2009. The papillomavirus also named HPV are viruses extensively implied in the development of the cancer of the collar of the uterus but also of certain ENT cancers (pharynx and throat). A new survey suggests while this ENT cancers would be easier to take in charge.

Globally, the human papillomavirus (HPV) divide in two big families. The some affect skin and the second the mucous membranes. Some of these infections are benign (warts of the hand and arch plantaire), while others can evolve in cancer.

The papillomavirus implied in the ENT cancers

The unfavorable evolution of a HPV infection is not systematic, it is a necessary reason but non sufficient of some cancers. This phenomenon is already very known for the cancer of the collar of the uterus and for certain ENT cancers. The tie between ENT cancers and papillomavirus has been bound thus directly to some sexual practices (oral sex including fellation and cunnilingus notably). This cancer exploded in particular in some Nordic country.

Nevertheless, of the weak size studies had suggested that these cancers bound to the papillomavirus answered the treatments better that the other cancers, touched younger patients, presenting smaller tumors at the time of the diagnosis and being more often non-smokers. The other ENT cancers is caused generally by the alcohol or tobacco.

... but of the ENT cancers of better prognosis

These reports have been confirmed this year to the ASCO thanks to the largest survey on the ENT cancers bound in the HPV. To the total, 206 patients affected by ENT cancers bound in the HPV have been compared to 117 patients affected by ENT cancers without report with these viruses. All received a treatment by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Result:  after two years of follow-up, 87,9% of the patients of the first group were in life against 65,8% of the second group. The resurgence of the cancer in the first group was least half:  9% contre18%.

"Our results suggest that the HPV status is a factor of prognosis as important as the stage of development of the cancer for the patient reaches an ENT cancer, and it even after having taken into account other factors as age or the tobacco addiction" declares the Pr. Mara Gillison of the university of state of the Ohio.

Toward an evolution of research and the prevention?

Although the reasons of this difference remain unknown, these data suggest that these two cancers could be considered like different tumors. What would have tomorrow of the consequences on research (in particular the constitution of the clinical tests) and the treatment of these two types of cancers. Beyond research, these results throw back the debate on a widening of the indications of the vaccines against these papillomavirus. So close to a quarter of certain ENT cancers is bound directly to the sexually transferable papillomavirus, it appears with difficulty justifiable to limit the vaccination to the only girls of less than 14 years.
