Endurance sports not only help to fight flab, they can also help prevent diabetes by improving blood circulation and the body's susceptibility to insulin.

Physical activity aids in keeping the body's blood sugar levels under control. If diabetes is compounded by polyneuropathy, a malfunction of peripheral nerves, that can prevent the affected person from engaging in exercise because nerves in their arms and legs have been damaged.

Severe pain, paralysis, numbness or a tingling feeling in the feet are some of the symptoms of Polyneuropathy. That can make jogging or walking difficult.

Holger Grehl of the German Association of Neurologists advises his patients in cases like that to go swimming instead of taking part in an endurance sport as the feet are put under less strain.
