Eagle syndrome is medically name as the elongation of the styloid method and stylohyoid ligament calcification.

Eagle syndrome is an accumulate of symptoms caused by an elongated ossified styloid process. This typically occurs with aging, and frequently results in sharp, irregular pain along the glossopharyngeal nerve that is found in the hypopharynx and at the base of the tongue.

Eagle syndrommay feel like something is stuck in one's throat, and swallowing may be difficult. It may also be painful to turn one's head. Pain during swallowing, opening the mouth or forking the head may also be experienced. Eagle syndrome can be treated both surgical and nonsurgical. But ,eagle's syndrome can be successfully treated by surgery. Several transoral and extraoral-cervical ways to styloidectomy have been described. Transoral resection of the styloid process is perfectly easy to perform, it can be done with local anesthesia, it involves no extensive fascial dissection.

Transoral resection causes no outside scars; also, the length of both the operation and the recovery period is short. The risks of the transoral approach, which are low, involve the chance of a deep cervical infection and the possibility of a neurovascular injury during an attempt to leave as little remnant of the styloid process as possible. Nonsurgical treatments involves assure,, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications, and steroid injections. Conventional medical treatments may help alleviate the symptoms of Eagle syndrome, but they do not address the core of the problem.

Thanks for the information about Eagles Syndrome. Where in the UK can you
have this operation, NHS or private, but by someone who has done ti
several times before?
Thanks,

Anne

Hi Anne,

I am also looking to find someone in the UK who can do this Op, my ENT
has told me she couldn't find anyone.

Have you managed to find a doctor at all?
If you have managed to track someone down I would really appreciate it if you
could let me know, I want to get off all these pills and have my life back.

Any
details would be much appreciated, drop me a wee line if you want to swap
stories.

Yours

Gracie x

Hi Ladies,

Now, since posting this I have found out about 2 surgeons in the
UK who do it, both in England.

I don't have all the details to hand as I am
at work, so forgive any discrepencies here, but from what I can find out a Ben
Hartley who works at Great Ormond St does the op, or has done the op at least,
but only sees adults via private route.

And a Mr George Fayad in Basildon,
who is private but also does NHS. I am going to get in touch with my own ENT
this week, but apparently Mr Fayad has treated this and his secretary told me he
was currently treating someone with Eagles with Physio, now I think I'm too far
gone for that, but those are the 2 guys that I've found.

How much experience
they have I don't know, but I sure plan to find out!

Hope this is of some
help.

Hi Bev,

Thanks for your reply, it's good to hear from you and that you have
another surgeon in the pipelines, not so encouraging that you've had to go to 3
surgeons already!Hopefully this one will be a bit more encouraging.

I'm more
than happy to exchange all the info I can, as and when I get it, it has been a
long, long, long, haul to get to where I am now!

Mr Fayad has said that he
would be more thank happy to see me on doctors referal, it's the referal and the
NHS paying for it outwith my catchment area where might be where things get
complicated!

(of course they're happy to operate on within the catchment
area albeit they have very minimal experience and have told me they'll do it as
long as I understand they might make me worse, I have neuralgia, pain doesn't
get much worse!)

Anyway before I waffle any further I will away, but if you
want to swap stories, drop me a wee email on

unfortunately the e-mail address you've sent me reads as follows

e-mails.
Await your reply.

Hey Bev,

There was me thinking I'd manage to get it in there without any
problem, with all my fancy brackets and the likes!
Anyway the address as it is
in the above post but but it's at
g m a i l (dot) c o m

If that doesn't work
(and surely to goodness it will!) I'm registered on the brain talk community
boards, on the trigeminal neuralgia section, you're more than welcome to message
me there if this decides to be censor me again!

Much love

Please do not bother with Mr. Fayed @ Basildon. I have ossified stylohyoid
ligaments which cause me constant pain. I saw Mr. Fayed and he suggested
physiotherapy to me as well. This in fact could be dangerous and could cause
the ossified ligaments to break. I went to the Royal National ENT Hospital in
London and had an injection in the ligament which was very effective for 6
months. I am now awaiting another but all seem relucant to do surgery to
permanently aleviate the problem. I had to have my own MRI scans done and take
these with me as evidence.

Good luck.
