A French out of three suffers from rheumatisms. This term regroups all illnesses that touch the locomotive device, that means the bones, the joints, the muscles and the tendons. Panorama of the rheumatisms in numbers.

The rheumatisms are a frequent problem. Osteoarthritis, spondylarthritis ankylosante, osteoporosis, lombalgies... as many illnesses regrouped under the term rheumatisms. These represent the first reason of handicap.

..A frequent problem, to all age  Chiffres rhumatismes

The term rheumatism is a generic term designating the generally painful pathologies, affecting the joints and the bones, as well as the muscles, the tendons and the ligaments. The rheumatism is not therefore an illness of the old age, as one hears it again often to say, even though some shapes increase frequency with the ageing. It is a pathology that touches all age groups, what explains why this illness has such an economic impact.

Thus, in rheumatology, the average of age is of 36 years. A French out of three - either close to 20 millions people - suffers or endured rheumatisms, sharp or chronic. The problems of sciatica and vertebral osteoarthritis (backbone) touch 24% of people thus of more than 18 years in France, either 4,7 millions, and the peripheral osteoarthritis (hands, feet) and the inflammatory rheumatisms 19% either 3,9 millions. About 5 000 children endure a rheumatic illness in France. The arthritis juvenile idiopathique can appear to a very precocious age.

  ..Rheumatisms:  of numerous illnesses

The rheumatisms are pathologies to the very various shapes since our body consists of more of 200 bones and about hundred joints. More than 200 rheumatic illnesses exist. One distinguishes four main types of rheumatisms:  the inflammatory rheumatisms (rheumatoid arthritis, spondylarthropathies...) the degenerative rheumatisms (osteoarthritis...), the affections of the soft parts (fibromyalgie..) and the bony affections (osteoporosis...).

The rheumatoid arthritis (PR) and the spondylarthropathies is the two more frequent illnesses articular inflammatory chronicles of the adult. Capable to drive to destructions of the joints, the rheumatoid arthritis concerns 300 000 people in France. The spondylarthropathies is a group of inflammatory illnesses chronic of the joints and the zones of sinewy insertion touch the lower members essentially, sometimes the basin (sacro-iliac joints at the origin of pains fessières) and the backbone (lumbar pains). More than 200 000 people are concerned, in majority of the young topics. Degenerative rheumatism, the osteoarthritis defined by a wear of cartilage touches 6 millions of French. It is the most frequent of the illnesses rhumatologiques. The fibromyalgie, diffuse attack of the insertions of the tendons, even mysterious illness, would touch between 2 and 5% of the French population. Finally, 3 millions of French women are touched by the osteoporosis, illness that alters the solidity of the bones and returns them more sensitive to the risks of fractures.

  ..The first physical handicap reason

Some rheumatic illnesses are benign, of stern others. Potentially invalidating, they can affect the quality of life seriously, or even his length. Social curse that hits to all age, the affections of the bones and joints are thus the first reason of handicap in the world and prolonged pains.

In France, the rheumatisms represent the first motive of recourse to the care and the major reason of the holidays illnesses and hospitalizations. The osteoarthritis, that touches 6 millions of people in France, is the first reason of handicap. His socioeconomic cost is raised very. The rheumatoid arthritis (PR) is a potentially stern illness, that causes a functional handicap at close to the half of the patients 10 years after the beginning of the clinical symptoms. The spondylarthritis ankylosante, that is part of the group of the spondylarthropathies, also has very heavy economic and social consequences:  stop of middle yearly work of 62 days by patient, 27% of the patients are admitted in invalidity and pensioners, 20,3% change profession and 20,3% abandon all professional activity.

Facing this report, the French law of public health of August 9, 2004 placed the main rheumatic affections (osteoarthritis, lombalgies, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, spondylarthropathies...) among the priority objectives. The affections of the bones and joints have been designated like world stake of the decade 2000-2010 by the WHO (decade of the bones and joints). The objective? To improve health and the quality of life of the patients enduring affections rhumatologiques.
