Just weeks after quitting smoking, women show major reductions in several markers of inflammation associated with heart disease risk, new research shows.

The findings point the way to a strategy for encouraging people at risk of heart disease to kick the habit, the study's authors say.

Smoking is known to promote inflammation, while quitting cuts the risk of developing and dying from heart and lung disease, Dr Christine N Metz of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in Manhasset, New York, and her colleagues write in the medical journal Chest. However, it's unknown whether benefits are seen immediately after a person quits.

Smokers are more likely to develop gum disease than non-smokers, according
to a German non-profit organization that promotes
oral health.

Deutsche Parodontose Hilfe says smoking can cause
periodontitis, or gum disease, and recommends quitting
smoking.

Periodontitis is caused by nicotine, which depletes bone tissue
and causes blood vessels in the mouth to contract and reduce
circulation. As a result tissue in the mouth receives too little oxygen and
other nutrients.

The immune system in the mouth is also damaged,
allowing bacteria to multiply and cause infections. The disease can
progress to the stage where teeth lose their stability and fall out.
