Named as condylomes or crests of rooster, the genital warts are lesions of the mucous membrane to the anal or vulvo-vaginal level. Visible to the naked eye, they are particularly little pleasant and of course very infectious.

The genital warts are due to some stumps of the papillomavirus (or HPV), an extremely frequent virus in the population since the risk to make an infection one day to HPV is from 80% to 85% at the sexually active people. This virus can be contracted easily since the first sexual touching. Most of the time, the infection in the HPV virus remains completely asymptomatique, however when some genital warts occur, these last must be treated correctly.

Genital warts:  an incubation of 1 to 3 months

One to three months can happen between the moment where one contracts the infection and where this one develops itself. Very infectious sexually transferable infection, one counts 0,25 to 0,3% of new cases per year in world.

The risk of coïnfection is of course important because the genital warts contract themselves as the other MST, that means at the time of non protected sexual intercourse (in particular:  direct contact of skin to skin with the penis, vagina, vulva, anus...). To note:  it is possible to contract the HPV (of which some stumps are at the origin of the genital warts) while kissing or while touching a partner's genital parts with the mouth.

How to recognize the genital warts?

These excrescences of cloths have the appearance of pigmented or flesh-colored warts. They are located to the level of the verge or the anus at the man and to the level of the vulva, of the vagina, of the collar of the uterus or the anus at the woman.

"In general an infected person has several variable size warts but the most often visible to the naked eye" explains Doctor Marie Razon, physician general practitioner in Paris. If the lesions are often painless and don't scrape, it is yet indispensable to treat them.

Condylomes:  a painful treatment

The physician recommends a local treatment of a length of 3 to 15 weeks according to the cases. The patient applies an ointment that is going "to burn" the genital warts then. If the lesions don't disappear, one can orient the patient toward a treatment by laser or a surgical act.

Genital warts:  consequences and recommendations

Of course, the use of condoms is obligatory until the complete disparation of the lesions.

Know otherwise that even though the treatment can prove to be painful it is necessary because there is not a spontaneous recovery. Finally, to decrease the risks to contract this infection, a vaccine exists  that immunizes the girls from 14 years against some stumps of the papillomavirus (of which some persons responsible of the genital warts).

A doctor can diagnose the condition from the wart’s appearance; a
magnifying glass may be needed to find small warts. Odd-looking warts
may require biopsy.
