The women would not be the only ones to know a decrease of their hormonal activity with age. Even though the reduction of the testosterone is not as brutal at the man, it would not be without consequence. Is it necessary to resort to a treatment of substitution? To whom to reserve it? All these questions are at the heart of a quick debate.

Decrease of the libido, fatigue, increase of the cardiovascular risk, fretfulness, increase of the waist measurement,. All these frequent symptoms at the mature men of age could hide a deficit in testosterone. At the time of the last convention of the French association of urology (AFU), the specialists summed up this controversial topic.

The andropause, an inappropriate term

As the women, would the men see them their hormones to fall at fifty? A lot less brutal than the distress of the menopause, the deficit in testosterone bound to age (DALA) would translate a progressive reduction of this hormone. Not constituting a masculine fatality (contrary to the menopause that touches all women), this slow transition allows most men to keep their reproductive function until an advanced age. It is why the term DALA is preferred to the one of andropause.

According to some studies, this reduction of the testosterone would start since the age of 30 years at the rate of 1 to 2% with an. But important personal factors play since some men will keep all their life a rate raised of testosterone, whereas others will have a testosteronemie very lowered. Outside of the ageing, other reasons can entail such a deficit:  lesions of the testes (traumatism, surgical ablation, irradiation, chemotherapy.), hormonal unrests (some illnesses of the hypophysis), some medicines and the genetic anomalies.

The number of men concerned is the object of controversial hypotheses. According to the report of the French association of Urologie, "at least 20% of the men of more than 60 years  and about 50% of those of more than 80 years have an abnormally "lowered testosterone. Of the numbers to put in parallel with the ageing of the population. In France in 2010, the more of 65 years will represent 20% of the men and more again in 2050 where the masculine life expectancy should reach 82 years!
