The surgery of the obesity, efficient against the diabetes?
Wednesday September 03, 2008 The obesity and the diabetes are intimately bound two illnesses. To such point that one speaks of epidemic of "diabésité." Other proof of these dangerous links: to treat the obesity by the surgery greatly improves the problems of blood sugar. The French researchers identified the mechanism at the origin of this phenomenon. To treat the obesity, one has more and more resort to the surgery. The most known intervention is the implantation of a gastric ring, that is going to reduce the size of the stomach thus artificially. The patient eats less and loses the weight therefore. Other technique very used, the "Bypass": one reduces the size of the stomach and one installs a "derivation" toward the intestine... These techniques improve the problems of diabetes of the patients, and permitting to alleviate their treatment. But the two surgical gestures don't have the same effect: with the technique of the ring, the diabetes is improved logically after the loss of weight. On the other hand, the bypass acts since the exit of the hospital on the blood sugar and the sensitivity to the insulin!
How to explain this result? Of the French researchers of the university Claude Bernard of Lyons and the Bichat hospital of Paris, think to have found the explanation. They placed the gastric rings and bypass among the mouse and compared the effects to identify the mechanism in game. Result: at the mice bypass, the intestine has the particularity to stimulate the manufacture of glucose, one synthesis that lasts between the meals. This detection of glucose activates a signal transmitted to the brain that attenuates the sensation of hunger and improve in the same time the sensitivity to the insulin.
With these works, the strategies of struggle against the diabetes could take a new turn, calling on the gastric surgery or to medicines that would target the intestine...
