More of 120 countries signatory of the Convention of Rotterdam, unite in conference in Rome, didn't succeed in agreeing to add the asbestos chrysotile, the most toxic shape of this mineral fiber, to the list of chemicals of the Convention of Rotterdam. 126 countries adopted in 1998 the Convention of Rotterdam in order to protect the health of people and the environment against possible damages bound to the trade of chemicals. This one has for objective to encourage the sharing of the responsibilities and cooperation between the signatory countries in the domain of the international trade of some very dangerous chemicals, of which the pesticides and industrial chemicals.
39 dangerous chemicals appear on this list PEAK (information and previous consent). Are there for example registered different pesticides but also five asbestos types. At the time of the meeting of Rome, that must end in the evening October 31, the signatory countries must decide if two pesticides (the endosulfan and the tributylétain) and the asbestos chrysotile, the only again marketed asbestos shape, is going to be added on this list.
One already knows that the attempts to write down the asbestos chrysotile on the list of the dangerous chemicals failed, due to a lack of consensus. Canada, one of the most important exporters of chrysotile to the world, didn't participate in the debate but he/it was sufficient that his/her/its main customers who are India, Pakistan, the Philipppineses and Vietnam are against this enrollment so that the project is abandoned.
To less a turning around, it will be necessary to wait for the next meeting of the countries signatory of the Convention of Rotterdam, presumably in 2010, to see the asbestos chrysotile added to this list of dangerous products maybe finally.
