Don't eat so fast, you'll get indigestion. That's the conclusion of US researchers, who found that eating too quickly causes regurgitation of food and heartburn.

A research group in the United States discovered what your mummy always told you. Don't eat so fast, you'll get indigestion. Mind you, in my house growing up, anyone who ate slowly was assumed to be gastronomically disabled and didn't enjoy their food. Tasting food was a transient phenomenon which your brain learnt to process at the reflex speed of a fighter pilot.

Anyway, on two occasions, healthy volunteers were given a meal consisting of a chicken burger, fries and a carbonated drink. On one day they were given half an hour to savour this tantalising meal and on another they had to wolf it down in under seven minutes. These unfortunate guinea pigs then had to sit with a catheter down their throat recording acid and pressure measurements at the lower end of their gullet.

And yes, surprise surprise, the gobbled meals were associated with significantly more episodes of stuff coming back up from the stomach in the first hour..... and this was independent of the burping from the fizzy drink.

The importance of this revolutionary science apart from providing an evidence base for maternal nagging, is that people with heartburn might be better off slowing down at the table.
