Use of viagra has been associated with seizures.

A word of warning has been raised about Viagra by a couple of case reports in the British Medical Journal.

The reports were of two men who had epileptic seizures within a few hours of taking their first dose of Viagra (whose non-trade name is sildenafil).

The first man was 63 and all his heart and brain tests were normal. He was advised it was probably sildenafil and warned off it. But he tried it again a few months later and sure enough, had another fit.

The second case was a man of 54 who also had a convulsion a few hours after taking the erectile dysfunction drug for the first time and again the tests were normal. Neither of the men was having sex at the time.

Apparently the manufacturer of sildenafil has had a small number of similar reports but they haven't been so closely linked as these.

It's almost certainly a rare problem and cause and effect is far from proven.

Even so it means that doctors need to be vigilant with their patients on sildenafil should they have an unexpected seizure.
