Researchers have found that taking vitmain E doesn't reduce (and that taking beta carotene actually incerases) the risk of death from heart disease and stroke.

Australian urine would have to be amongst the most expensive in the world, given the millions of dollars of vitamins we swallow every year.

Well here's a study which might save your salary leaking away.

Researchers at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic in Ohio have analysed the world scientific literature looking for benefits from swallowing antioxidants to prevent heart disease - specifically vitamin E and beta carotene.

They were able to analyse data from over 80,000 people taking vitamin E and nearly 140,000 trialled on beta carotene, looking at death rates from heart disease and stroke.

The results showed no benefit from vitamin E and a small but statistically significant increased risk in those who took beta carotene.

This suggests that researchers may need to go back to the drawing board over just how cholesterol does its damage and what substances may really interfere with that process. It may be that they've just chosen the wrong antioxidant when it comes to vitamin E. Mind you, dementia specialists still reckon it slows brain rot.

And with beta carotene the reason for the potential harm is unclear. It may affect blood fats in a bad way but whatever, it's probably best avoided.
