Urge incontinence is when someone has a strong sense of urgency to pass water and has trouble controlling it.

Botox injections are one treatment - they can relax the bladder and the preliminary findings are hopeful, especially in younger people.

There's a relatively new use for botox, currently popular for ironing out the wrinkles on the face but increasingly being used to iron out the bladder. And it's for a problem which has been thought of as belonging to women but plenty of men actually have it too - it's called urge incontinence. This is when someone has a strong sense of urgency to pass water and has trouble controlling it.

It's commoner as people age and in terms of treatment, pelvic floor exercises help by allowing the bladder to relax. Some medications do the same thing but have side effects and there's an expensive gadget called a bladder pacemaker which controls the bladder using electrodes.

Botox injections also relax the bladder and are cheaper than the pacemaker. The preliminary findings are hopeful, especially in younger people. Side effects include over-relaxing the bladder so it passes nothing at all, which presumably can mean a bladder which stretches up to your throat. Mind you that could mean for the same price your neck wrinkles would be fixed too.
