Tea may be an effective agent for prevention of cancers of the ovary and prostate.

Tea may be an effective agent for prevention of cancers of the ovary and prostate. And tomatoes aren't bad for the prostate.

A group from Curtin University in Perth performed the research in China. They compared people with these types of cancers to similar people who didn't have them. With ovarian cancer, women drinking the equivalent of around six teaspoonfuls of green tea leaf per day, had a lower risk of developing the disease. And in those who had ovarian cancer, green tea consumption was associated with improved survival.

With prostate cancer it was similar - a 75 per cent reduction in risk for men drinking more than a litre of green tea a day.

The researchers did take into account other lifestyle factors by the way, including soy intake.

The tomato story is really about lycopene - the red colouring, which you can also find in other vegetables. Again in Chinese men, the more lycopene consumed - as well as other similar substances - the lower the risk of prostate cancer.

It's tempting to think that just taking supplements of these micronutrients is the answer. That's usually a recipe for disappointment. The benefit almost always seems to be from the whole food.
