The breast cancer is the most frequent of the feminine cancers. How to protect itself of it? Who are the women the more exposed? What are the treatments? All answers to the questions that you ask on this terrifying enemy.

1 - what are the women to risk of breast cancer?

The breast cancer will touch a woman on eight during her life. Rare before 35 years, It develops itself in the three quarters of the cases at women of more than 50 years. It is why a free tracking of this cancer by mammography is proposed every two years to all Frenchwomen of 50 to 74 years. The hope is, with this tracking, to increase at least 30% the rate of recovery because the cancers of less than one centimeter marked by the tracking heal the most often. It remains that some women are a few more exposed that the other. It is the case of the women that didn't have any children or had them after 40 years, of some women who already presented mammary lesions to risk, of the women who have been adjusted precociously and menopausees late, of the women who drink too much alcohol... One also knows genetic shapes of breast cancers, but they are rare, 5 to 8% of the cases.

2 - why does the breast cancer increase it?

With 42 000 new cases per year today against 21 000 in 1980, the increase of the number of breast cancers is altogether real and don't seem to be only attributable to the overtime of the life span or to a more precocious diagnosis in relation with the diffusion of the mammography. For as much, the explanation misses. The specialists wonder if the modifications of our life styles and notably of our food don't play a deleterious role. Also suspected, the pollution, the effects of the hormonal treatments. But other cancers also increased since 20 years as the cancer of the prostate, whereas the men don't yet take any hormones

3 - it is necessary to avoid to take the pill or a THS to the menopause to protect itself ?

For the pill, the question is delicate. During a long time, the specialists considered that sIt didn't increase the risk of breast cancer globally. Today, the experts are less categorical. But, if sIt exists, the increase of risk is probably of size limited with the pill and this means of contraception offer the advantage to decrease the probability of apparition of other cancers as the one of the ovary. In any case, the pill is contraindicated after a breast cancer, and it is necessary to prefer the methods of mechanical contraception then (I.U.D., condoms...). It is admitted that the substitutive hormonal treatment (THS) combining estrogens and progestatifs, that can be prescribed to the menopause, increase a little the probability of breast cancer and the danger rises with the length of prescription. A report of the French agency of sanitary security of the health products, published October 13, 2005, esteem thus between 650 to 1 200 per year the surplus of breast cancers at the women of 40 to 65 years, either 3 to 6% of these tumors. Also, this agency recommends to take this treatment solely if one really has need of it, for example to correct puffs of bothersome heat, for the possible shortest length and to revalue every year the necessity to pursue it.

4 - why some women have an ablation and of other not?

A conservative treatment is proposed more and more often. But, It is not always possible, either because there are several tumorous homes in the breast, either because of some cellular features and tissulaires of the tumor, either again because sIt passes three centimeters. In some cases, one can start the treatment with a chemotherapy to decrease the tumorous volume, what permits to operate in a second time while keeping the breast.
