Waist measurement raised, anomalies of the arterial tension, sugar and greases. The metabolic syndrome advances concealed, without any symptom.

 But she is far from being insignificant and increase the risk of cardiovascular complications and diabetes. Who is concerned? How to track down this insidious illness?. All answers with Beverley Balkau, searcher to the Inserm.

 According to the most alarming studies, the metabolic syndrome increases the risk of cardiovascular illnesses and diabetes. Facing such threats, a precocious tracking of this new enemy appears a real public health stake.

  ..A phenomenon in increase

Syndrome métaboliqueThe metabolic syndrome is characterized by raised one waist measurement, an excess of greases and sugar in blood and a too elevated arterial tension. Although the heredity seems to play a role, it is especially a too sedentary life style and a food unbalanced that are in reason. In the western countries, the malbouffe and the physical activity absence gangrene capital health more and more people. To the United States, the X syndrome or metabolic syndrome would touch an American on four. At the more of 60 years, the situation would be even preoccupying since more than 40% of the seniors would be concerned. The Afro-American and the Hispanic would be touched more often. To the total, the metabolic syndrome hits close to 47 millions Américains1

The metabolic syndrome is characterized by raised one waist measurement, an excess of greases and sugar in blood and one In Europe, it would seem that the situation is less alarming, with 15% reached by the syndrome métabolique2. But these numbers vary according to the definition of the metabolic syndrome. So another European survey based on the criterias of the world organization of health estimates that "Among the non diabetic subjects, the frequency of the WHO syndrome varied according to the survey of 7% to 36% at the men of 40 to 55 years;  at the women of the same age, of 5% to 22%."

Responsible of the survey French DESIRE (Epidemiological Data on the Syndrome of Insulino-resistance), Beverley Balkau specifies us the national situation:  "The metabolic syndrome would concern in France 9% of the men and 6% of the women, against respectively 24% and 23% in the States-Unis"3s.

  ..A delayed-action bomb

A delayed-action bomb on both sides of the Atlantic, the profile of the patients is appreciably the same. Among the non modifiable factors of risk, one recovers age, the domestic antecedents of diabetes or cardiovascular illnesses. But one can act nevertheless on the main that are the physical activity lack, the unbalanced food, the tobacco addiction and stress. But facing the Americanization of our food habits, we can expect a rise in power of the metabolic syndrome in Europe and in France.

And the consequences won't be solely aesthetic, this illness increases the risk of cardiovascular illnesses and diabetes, two of the main curses of the western world. "According to the French results, the cardiovascular illness risk is quasi-doubled (multiplied by 1,4 for the men and by 1,7 for the women) and the one of diabetes triplet (multiplied by 2,4 for the men and by 3,4 for the women) "underlines Mrs. Balkau. To the United States, this silent enemy would dethrone the tobacco addiction soon as first reason of illnesses cardiovasculaires4. The stake of a tracking and a hold in precocious charge appears thus like a priority.

  ..To measure the waist measurement as one takes tension

 To measure the waist measurement as one takes tension According to the definition the more used, the metabolic syndrome is characterized by the presence of three factors among the 5 next one:

.Waist measurement >  102 cm at the men and >  88 cm at the women. these numbers could be modulated according to the ethnic group;

.HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) <  40 mg/dl at the men and <  50 mg/dl at the women;

.Triglycérides >  150 mg/dl (1,7 mmol/L);

.Blood sugar on an empty stomach >  1 g/dl;

.Arterial tension >  130-85 Hgs mm.
