Dutch researchers recently completed a study shows that women during pregnancy eat too much meat and less fruit diet, infants increased risk of cleft lip or cleft palate 1 times. The case-control study included 203 cases of cleft lip and palate baby's mother and 178 patients with normal infant's mother.

Researchers in the 14 months after birth the mother's nutritional intake evaluation to measure serum and red blood cell folate, serum vitamin B12, vitamin B6 in whole blood and plasma homocysteine and other biomarkers, and the use of food types, for Univariate and multivariate analysis and calculation of odds ratios. The results showed that the Western-type diet of meat, pizza, beans and potatoes and fruit are more rare, and increased risk of cleft lip and palate related (odds ratio 1.9).

After correction for potential confounding factors, the risks are still significant. Western-type diet and a low red blood cell folate (P = 0.02), vitamin B6 (P = 0.001), vitamin B12 (P = 0.02), as well as higher concentrations of homocysteine (P = 0.05) related. Healthy diet of fish, garlic, nuts, vegetables and more, an increase of vitamin B12 (P <0.001) and serum folate (P = 0.05) levels, has nothing to do with the risk of cleft lip and palate.

Research suggests that the Western-type diet may increase the risk of cleft lip and palate occur offspring a times, pregnancy, pre-screening program should include diet and lifestyle and so on.
